Low Carbon Barton

Low Carbon Barton is a group of residents committed to raising awareness of climate change locally, cutting Barton’s CO2 emissions, promoting sustainability and engagement with the natural environment. We are constituted as a CAG and operate as a sub-group of Barton Community Association.
LCB is one of three Pathfinder Communities in Oxford (with LCSO and LCON) piloting the Low Carbon Hub. We have a start-up grant from the Department of Energy and Climate Change and Oxford City Council.

Low Carbon Barton currently has 4 main carbon-cutting projects:
  • Installation of SOLAR PANELS on the Neighbourhood centre roof. (13.32 kWp saving 5.95 tonnes of CO2 every year). Installation subject to City Council approval.
  • LOW CARBON LIVING PROGRAMME: To launch locally at the ‘GREEN FUN DAY’ SATURDAY 3rd SEPTEMBER, 11-3 at BARTON NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE. This is the no-guilt programme designed by Low Carbon West Oxford to help households make self-determined lifestyle changes that will cut carbon emissions. It features accurate footprinting using ‘QUICKSILVER’, one - to - one support and 6 group workshops. (Topics include Home Energy Efficiency, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and more). We aim to have 30 households sign up to the first run of the programme, with small grants awarded to those who successfully complete it. NB: programme and grants available to Barton residents only.
  • SWAPSHOPS: Our first Swapshop will be at the Green Fun Day. From then they will be held on the first Saturday of the month, 10.30-12.30, at Barton Neighbourhood Centre. Help Barton to divert useable items from landfill, pick up FREE STUFF and/or Donate unwanted books, clothes, bric-a-brac etc. (Electrical items will be PAT Tested) Advertise larger items on our noticeboard. Eatwells Café is open during swapshop hours.
  • SAVE BARTON NATURE PARK. Barton’s small (0.9ha) nature Park is currently included in housing development plans. Local people feel strongly that this valuable, much-loved resource should be saved and that future Barton residents will appreciate it as much as current residents. A 320 - signature petition was submitted to the Lady mayor on 19.7.11. LCB is working with CAG, and others on community engagement projects at/about the Nature Park to provide a strong case to save it from development.

Other projects in early stages include a School garden at Bayards Hill Primary, free gardening courses for adults and youth and more. Watch this space!

OxGrow

radishes-webOxGrow is Oxford's Edible Community Garden
The people of Oxford have come together to transform two grass tennis courts into a thriving food-growing space. Volunteers of all ages work together, learn together, share the harvests, and are kick-starting a local food revolution in the heart of the city.

SUNDAY WORK-PARTIES
We have open work-parties every Sunday between 1 and 4 pm. Everyone's welcome – all ages and all levels of experience and ability. Tools and materials are provided. Just turn up, wearing good shoes/boots and rain-gear if necessary. We also run special one-off work-parties on week-days for specific groups (often children or teenagers), on request.

herb-spiral-webORGANISING

OxGrow is run non-hierarchically, which means that everyone can get involved in whatever way suits them best, and decisions are made by consensus.
We have informal planning meetings after the work-parties every second Sunday, and everyone is welcome to attend these.

If you'd like to help facilitate a work-party, come along at 12 when the coordinators plan the session and share out facilitation roles. And we always need help with the work that goes on in the background, from fundraising to blogging to design.

So get in touch if you'd like to help out in any way!

PARTNERSHIPS

OxGrow is partnered with Hogacre Common, a community-run Eco-Park linked to Low Carbon South Oxford and Low Carbon West Oxford. All sorts of events happen on-site, from bee-keeping to tree-planting to renewable energy-generation. For more info on Hogacre events, contact Ben on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
As well as being a CAG, OxGrow is a member of the Oxford Hub http://oxfordhub.org/, a charity that connects students with projects in the local community. Students have been crucial in mobilising OxGrow right from the start, and we hope that OxGrow will help to break down Oxford's infamous town-gown divide.
