Kidlington vs Climate Change

Aims and objectives of the group

KvsCC meets on the first Tuesday of the month at The Dogwood pub in Kidlington. Anyone can come along and see what we do. Membership is free, send Your name and email address to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Members can be as active or passive as they choose.

KvsCC aims to:

· raise awareness of climate change, its causes and what we can all do about it, in Kidlington and the surrounding area;
· bring people in the Kidlington area to the point of willingly deciding to take action on climate change - in their lives, their places of work and/or in the wider community.

Anthony Simpson at Kidlington Fair

Founded by Anthony Simpson in July 2007. KvsCC has held a number of successful events, including:
· stands at the Kidlington Gala,
· a showing of "An Inconvenient Truth" at Exeter Hall, Kidlington.
· Organising the first Kidlington Sustainability Fair (13 June 2009) with 20 stands and around 250 visitors;
· Gatherings at the Dogwood. The first gathering was in early November 2007.
· Regular articles published in the local newsletter Kidlington News;
· Links with Climate Exchange, Cherwell District Council, Kidlington Voice, Midcounties Co-operative Society - 5 members of KvsCC attended "The Big Climate Event" at the Oxford Town Hall on 7th November;
· Scout Troop Night: with nearly 40 scouts, with quizzes and activities to raise/test awareness about food, energy, heating, transport and consuming stuff!
· Age of Stupid" film night - for which we had a sell-out of 250 tickets, and Q&A with our MP Dr Evan Harris, as well as Chris Goodall & Oliver Tickel.

Group member Steve Gerrish is organising a workshop event for 50 people in Kidlington called "Climate Change Condensed" - February 2009.

Duns Tew Community Action Group

A group of people in Duns Tew have been meeting together to look at ways they can involve the village in carbon reduction activities. They held a successfull swap shop in the summer of 2009 and another as part of the CAG County Wide event in January 2010.

Members in the village are meeting to discuss what they want to do. At one of their first meeting, by writing their ideas on paper, they were able to prioritise some of the future activities. They are looking at a possible 'bike day' and trying to get people to share their harvest from fruit trees, allotments and gardens. More ideas and help are always welcome.

Dean Court CAG

Dean Court CAG

Dean Court is part of the Parish of Cumnor and our estate is composed of approximately 50/50 housing association tenants and owner/occupiers. There is also a sprinkling of private tenants with non-resident landlords, so we are a very mixed community. What we all have in common is the desire to make our environment into what it was originally conceived as in the era of Homes for Heroes - a place to be proud of.

Judging from the success of our recent litter pick in March 2009, though, we will probably be focussing on litter and waste.

We started the Dean Court Estates Residents' Association about six years ago, but ran out of steam because there were so few people willing to get involved. The idea of converting the existing association to a Community Action Group, though, has really struck a chord. The first meeting of our CAG is going to be on April 16th 2009, in the Dean Court Social Club, so we haven't really sorted out all our priorities yet.

It's going to be hard to get across the concept of a waste-free society, but several of the younger children have been keen participants in our litter picks. We hope to get activities like bike-repair workshops organised, together with collections of recyclable materials that are not at present undertaken by the Vale: things like ink cartridges, mobile phones, spectacles, strip lights, light bulbs, Tetrapaks and electrical items. Getting a scheme going which will use just one vehicle to a near-by recycling centre could be a step towards a car-free environment . . . well, we can dream about the day when our once-green verges will again be a source of pride and a place to play.

Big Lunch Celebration

A Big Thank you for your support in the first Big Lunch on 19th July 2009.

 "At the end of the day we felt we had a community spirit, which we didn't have before. Now when we see each other we say hello, how are you doing: we are on first term names, it's brilliant! People are actually smiling."

What happened

On Sunday 19th July 2009:

Up to 2 million people took part - Big Lunches took place across every type of community including some of the poorest neighbourhoods in the UK.
36% of the population are now aware of the Big Lunch: some 22 million people.
What happens next

We want The Big Lunch to be an annual event - almost like a Thanksgiving for neighbours. So let's use the momentum from this year's nationwide party to go on and make the 2010 Big Lunch even more fab.

The Big Lunch team is also gearing up for next summer, working with our sponsors and partners and joining up with new ones who can help us to help the nation throw a most spectacular bash in 2010 - and beyond.

When they come out in the spring it'll be a timely reminder to get the next Big Lunch off the ground in your community. You'll find all the resources to do this - before 30 November - at www.thebigbulbplant.com

If you want to get in touch with other people who've already organised a Big Lunch, for tips and hints, visit www.thebiglunchers.com

Sustainable Woodstock

Sustainable Woodstock started in November 2008. An inspirational town meeting eighteen months before at which three local organisations presented reports on an environmental theme had helped kick start the group. The organisations were Thames Valley Energy, The Wychwood project, and Oxford Rural Community Council. One speaker in particular said "it's no use just talking about the problems you need to get up and do something about it!" So we did. Belatedly, but we did.

There is widespread support for the group but, as yet, not too many active members. Nevertheless we have already held a successful Swap Shop and have secured a grant from Oxford County Council to work towards becoming a "Plastic Bag Free Town". Our next event will be a public discussion on climate change, perhaps focused around a showing of the film "The Age of Stupid". We have an affiliated network of supporters at the Woodstock Fair Trade Group and the town's ecumenical group "Churches Together". We have support from the town's primary and secondary schools and from the trade association Wake Up to Woodstock.
