Sustainable Woodstock started in November 2008. An inspirational town meeting eighteen months before at which three local organisations presented reports on an environmental theme had helped kick start the group. The organisations were Thames Valley Energy, The Wychwood project, and Oxford Rural Community Council. One speaker in particular said "it's no use just talking about the problems you need to get up and do something about it!" So we did. Belatedly, but we did.
There is widespread support for the group but, as yet, not too many active members. Nevertheless we have already held a successful Swap Shop and have secured a grant from Oxford County Council to work towards becoming a "Plastic Bag Free Town". Our next event will be a public discussion on climate change, perhaps focused around a showing of the film "The Age of Stupid". We have an affiliated network of supporters at the Woodstock Fair Trade Group and the town's ecumenical group "Churches Together". We have support from the town's primary and secondary schools and from the trade association Wake Up to Woodstock.
