LCON is taking practical action to combat climate change by helping people in the north of Oxford to cut their carbon emissions.
Carbon busting is easy and fun. Firsty we help you calculate your carbon footprint. Then we offer advice on how you can cut your carbon consumption over a year. You're free to decide what steps to take - there's no guilt-tripping or difficult maths involved.
We are looking at a range of other activities as well:
- Food and food waste
- Transport
- Renewable energy generation
- Buying goods and services
LCON first event at the Summertown Festival accompanied by Steven Bond's Earth Rover – a milk float bristling with solar technology. The weather was not good, but passersby gave encouragement and there were many stories of people starting down to Low carbon road.
This was followed on by their first public meeting in the North Oxford Association centre. A packed house heard grim stories of the climate changing contrasted with exciting examples of what can be done in Oxford. Guest speakers included James Painter (Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism) and Barbara Hammond (Low Carbon West Oxford). Many people expressed interest in their plans for Carbon Conversations and the Commonwealth Climate Challenge, both of which are covered below.
Future meetings are planned for the South of the area in St Margaret's Institute in November and in the Cutteslowe Community centre.
GreenHouse: A Commonwealth Climate Challenge gives 12 households in each of 12 cities in 12 countries across the Commonwealth 12 months to reduce their environmental impact. LCON publicised the Commonwealth Climate Challenge at our public meeting in July. Carbon Conversations
Carbon Conversations is an inspiring, practical 6-session course on low-carbon living:
- based on the psychology of change
- emotionally engaging
- technically rigorous
- up to date, attractive handbook, games and materials
LCON is planning to start a course of Carbon Conversations which will commence on Wednesday 15th September and will comprise fortnightly meetings running up to Christmas. The first course is being facilitated by Tim Nicholson and Amanda Stibrany and will cost participants £20 for the course.
