Grassroots Bicester

Grassroots Bicester was formed in October 2010 and became a Community Action Group in January 2011.
Our aim is to help to build a better world by growing a greener Bicester.
Our objectives are:
• To promote awareness of the 3 R’s of waste (Reduce, Re-use & Recycle)
• To work with local residents to build a better community in Bicester
• Raise awareness of climate change and reduce Bicester’s carbon footprint

In the short time we have been established we have held regular 'Freecycling...Live' events, a specialised Gardening & DIY Freecycling day and Eco Bicester day where we combined forces with Oxford County Council’s travel team, Cherwell Recycling team, Bicester Vision, the Eco Bicester team from Cherwell District Council, Love Food Hate Waste and WyeVale Garden centre. We hold regular stands at prominent events in Bicester where we plant free seeds for the Bicester community to encourage them to 'grow their own fruit & vegetables'.  We have also initiated a Garden Share scheme, matching gardeners without gardens to garden owners who are keen to see their land put to good use.
Some of the members of the groupGrassroots are currently hoping to create an orchard in Bicester, which we hope could belong to and be run by the community for the community, it would be a source of locally grown fruit, an outdoor classroom for local school children and a place for quiet contemplation for residents to enjoy.
We like to participate in lots of different events within Bicester, to raise awareness of all areas of sustainability i.e. food, waste, energy & transport. We provide a varied schedule of events, so to reach all sections of the community, working wherever possible with other groups within the community, i.e. The Rotary Club, Fair Trade, Playgroups & Schools, Allotment Association, Youth Council & the Courtyard Youth Arts project and many others.
We are keen to build up relationships with all the CAGs in Oxfordshire, with a view to sharing skills, expertise and ideas and have a Facebook group dedicated to this: CAG Oxfordshire so feel free to come and join in. We would like to see all the Oxfordshire CAGs working alongside each other to support the combined work we do, as we are all singing from the same song sheet after all.
We meet regularly and welcome anyone along to our meetings, or as volunteers for events, so if you are keen to get involved in Grassroots, or find out more about our current and future projects then please get in touch.

On Saturday 31 March Grassroots Bicester's second Eco Day attracted over 600 people:
