The Charlbury Area Waste Action Group (CAWAG) is a voluntary group established in 1997 which has worked closely with both West Oxfordshire District Council and Oxfordshire County Council to help Charlbury "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle" to reduce its impact on the environment, to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and increase the recycling facilities via the black boxes, the green waste scheme and the recycling bins at the Spendlove carpark. Our CO2 What Can I Do? page lists over 100 easy ways to reduce your carbon footprint. New volunteers are always welcome - if you'd like to get involved in slowing the rubbish flow and reducing the impact on the environment, please email

In May 2008 we produced a Quick Guide to "Reduce, Reuse & Recyle" for Charlbury which was distributed to every household with the Charlbury Chronicle, with the aim of reducing the amount of rubbish going to landfill. This leaflet summarised and updated the key parts of the printed A-Z Directory which was put together jointly by CAWAG and the Finstock Recycling Group in 2004, and the earlier A-Z Directory produced by CAWAG in 2002. The more detailed A-Z is now available on-line at http://www.cwag.org.uk/ and is constantly updated.
We also provide information displays at the annual Wychwood Fair, Charlbury Street Fair, and Charlbury Riverside Festival and the quarterly Charlbury Farmers' Markets. Periodically we organise public talks on waste and recycling.

Low-Energy Lightbulb Library
Take a simple first step to help prevent climate change - change to low-energy lightbulbs throughout your house.
There is now a huge range of size and type of low-energy lightbulb available, so avoid making expensive mistakes by borrowing our lightbulb library for a couple of evenings so that you can actually try them in your own light fittings. There are bulbs that fit cooker hoods, daylight bulbs for desk lamps, dimmers, GU10s, spotlights, candles, etc and the library provides full details on costs and where they can be obtained.
By installing low-energy bulbs you can cut the energy you use for lighting by 75% so also reducing your carbon emissions by 75%. They also last much longer than conventional bulbs (e.g. 8 times as long).
The library also includes a wattage and current meter so that you can measure the electricity consumed by an appliance (e.g. a TV) in standby mode or by a transformer when the appliance (e.g. a radio) is switched off.
Please contact Louise Spicer to borrow the lightbulb library by phoning 01608-810745. (the light bulb library is on temporary loan to Witney Waste Action group)
The library has been organised and funded by the Charlbury Area Waste Action Group in conjunction with Sustainable Charlbury (SusCha).
