First impressions were favourable. Arriving at Veolia's Integra North, Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) was a pleasant surprise. All the myths of big black clouds of smoke; loud noise, smell and litter strewn around were dispelled. Public prejudice about incinerators certainly seemed misplaced. Mr Collis, Production Director who showed us round had an answer for every question fired at him. The debate about the best method both cost effectively and environmentally is still unresolved. There are those like Kevin Harrison from Sustainable Wallingford who feel that this is an excellent route for disposal of waste, particularly hazardous organic material, as well as domestic waste. There are others who favour different methods and still have reservations. However, overall comments from participants were very favourable and people were impressed with the facility and its capabilities.
Integra North, ERF was the first of its kind to be built in Hampshire and one of the leading examples of best environmental practice for waste treatment. Even the building was ascetically pleasing, and one section had a green roof. It recovers heat energy from the waste to produce steam, which is used to generate electricity and supplied to the National Grid. Strict environmental controls are adhered to.
The project was formed on the basis of a seven-point action plan, which includes waste minimisation, composting and recycling.
