OxFood is a sustainable local food systems project forming part of the Low Carbon Oxford Programme in association with Oxford City Council and the Community Action Group Project.
After year 1 of the project, OxFood is pleased to be publishing its analysis of the local food system in a couple of ways:
1) Nearly 300 responses were received to the online local food consultation – key trends included:
- There is a strong demand for local food but there are issues with availability and access
- The freshness of local food was the key selling point for respondents
- People want to feel a connection to their food; the story behind the production
- There is strong support for local production as part of Oxfordshire’s economy
The full executive summary will be available online soon at www.oxford.gov.uk/localfoodsurvey
2) OxFood’s Dan Betterton will be writing a local food blog for the Low Carbon Hub from its launch later this year. OxFood have also prepared a local food map and resource directory for community groups.
Ambitious plans for year 2 include co-development of a community-owned local food enterprise, further focus group consultation and work to scope the potential for supermarket involvement in a local food economy – check out www.oxfood.co.uk for the latest news.
