Over 250 Oxfordshire residents raising awareness and taking action on climate change will attend an event to celebrate and build on the successes of environmental groups across the county. The launch of the Low Carbon Hub, a brand new resource to support community-led environmental change, will showcase new ideas, outline how the Hub will help communities to take action and look ahead to Zero Carbon Britain 2030.
The Low Carbon Hub will be launched at Oxford Town Hall on the 1st December from 6.30–9.30pm. Speaking at the event will be Bruce Heagerty, from the Centre for Alternative Technology, and Barbara Hammond, Director of Low Carbon Oxford and the Low Carbon Hub.
The Low Carbon Hub is by communities, for communities: the Hub will provide access to resources, training and advice, helping people build their confidence to take practical action on a small or large scale. The Hub’s community energy service will help communities that lack the capacity, expertise, or funds, to set up their own projects to harness Government incentives on renewable energies.
The Hub has worked with the following pathfinder communities in Oxfordshire: Eynsham Green TEA, Kidlington vs Climate Change, Low Carbon Barton, Low Carbon East Oxford, Low Carbon Headington, Low Carbon Oxford North, Low Carbon South Oxford, Low Carbon West Oxford.
The Low Carbon Hub is being developed by a group of partner organisations (including the City Council, County Council, COIN, CAG Oxfordshire, ClimateXChange and Low Carbon West Oxford) to support environmental change in communities across Oxfordshire. The aim is to help deliver the City and County goals on cutting carbon emissions by providing a “hub” where communities can find a route to all they need to take action.
The Hub will not aim to be comprehensive but will be a trusted and credible source of essential information, strategic advice and support, both on and off-line. The resources, training and services will be generated by Hub "experts" with first-hand experience in their field to help communities cut through the information overload and build the confidence to act. Communities across Oxfordshire can use the Hub to run community action groups and develop low carbon projects.
The website is launched on the 1 December 2011. You can find it at: http://www.lowcarbonhub.org/
