Oxfordshire's Hub wins big grant from DECC

The Low Carbon Hub has been successful in its bid for £128K of funding from the Department of Energy & Climate Change for their Local Energy Assessment Project. The funds are to help UK communities take the next steps in reducing their carbon footprints.

The Low Carbon Hub is a community interest company set up to reduce carbon emissions and tackle climate change at the grass-roots level to create sustainable communities across Oxfordshire.

We will run eight integrated projects in the county between January and April 2012 to demonstrate that it is possible for communities to “power down” – make significant energy reductions and “power up” – optimise potential for renewable energy generation.

On the “powering down side”, we will run a pilot for the Green Deal with 200 “go early”households with the Energy Saving Co-op and run energy audits on community buildings.

On the “powering up” side, we will put together an Oxford local energy map to assess what potential there is for renewable energy projects across the city and county. And, we will bring communities together with experts and installers to identify renewable energy projects in their area. On the financing side, we will develop a county-wide share offer to enable anyone in Oxfordshire to invest in 3.5MW of community renewable projects and put together a finance learning set with Forum for the Future to enable communities to understand the range of financing options available.

We also now have funding to develop our big idea a “People’s Power Station” where house–holders, communities and business can register their energy reductions and their new energy generating capacity to an online virtual “barometer” on the Hub website. We will able to see the collective impact of thousands of individual actions on carbon emissions across the county, while working towards our vision of replacing Didcot A’s role in meeting our energy needs.

All this work will culminate with a community event – date to be confirmed!
