Low-carbon learning programme launches: book your place now!

logoThe Low Carbon Hub and the Climate Outreach and Information Network (COIN) are running two half-day courses to help you get the climate change message across effectively. This forms the beginning of a learning programme for low-carbon groups in Oxfordshire which will build on CAG Oxfordshire’s existing provision and will be a joint initiative of CAG Oxfordshire and the Low Carbon Hub.

Climate Change Condensed
30 June 2012
9:15–13:00 (followed by 30 minutes’ informal discussion over bring-and-share lunch) Quaker Centre, St Giles, Oxford OX1 3LW
An introduction to the science and public policy of climate change, with lots of opportunity to fill in any lurking gaps in your knowledge, get completely up-to-date, and discuss the implications for our work in low-carbon communities.

How to Win a Climate Change Argument in a 15-Minute Tea Break
7 July 2012
9:15–13:00 (followed by 30 minutes’ informal discussion over bring-and-share lunch)
Quaker Centre, St Giles Street, Oxford OX1 3LW
The course will work with the simple fact that people often form their views from their peers, and so short interactions between people who know each other can be the most effective way of changing people’s minds. We will script and practise these interactions, supporting each other in building our confidence.

Both workshops will be run by COIN founder and climate change communications expert George Marshall. They will be useful for members of low-carbon community groups who want to understand and work with proven research-based techniques for getting the climate change message across effectively. Interactive and fun, with a mix of theory and practice, these courses will increase your personal confidence in responding to the common reasons people give for inaction: “climate change is natural”; “it’s too late to do anything”; ”it’s because the Chinese keep building coal-fired power stations”. Through informal discussion over a bring-and-share lunch, these sessions will also help you to plan your group’s communication and engagement strategy with your local community.

Charge for each event: £30 full price, £25 each for two delegates from the same community group, £20 concessions (student/unwaged). Charge for both events booked together: £50 full price, £40 each for two delegates from the same community group, £30 concessions.
We recommend trying to arrange for more than one delegate from your community group to attend, because this makes it easier to put the ideas into practice afterwards – and we offer a small discount for this too.
