Barracks Lane Community Garden

After 5 years of campaigning and fundraising by local people, Barracks Lane Garden was officially launched by Andrew Smith MP and John Goddard, Leader of the City Council on 16th June 2007.

Barrack’s Lane Community Garden was pioneered by local residents to improve the local area and provide a focal point for the community, as well as a learning and recreation area.  The garden has a planted vegetable area where local people can learn about growing and harvesting food, this includes composting. There is a sand pit and picnic area, a central seating around planted flower beds and a yurt for meetings or to keep out of the rain.  The compost toilets are just about to be installed.

The group are still looking for additional funding for the project so if you know anyone who would like to donate funds to a very worthy cause, please contact us.

The Garden's aims

Barracks Lane Community Garden Project is a registered Charity.
Its objectives are:

  • To provide and maintain a public garden or gardens for the use and benefit of the inhabitants of the Oxford area and others
  • To develop and support community led gardening initiative in the Oxford area generally
  • To provide educational activities that support environmental sustainability including vegetable and flower growing, waste management and the use of renewable energy sources.
How to get there:
The site was a disused council garage site just off the Cowley Rd in East Oxford. It is a small site surrounded by housing and is only accessible from a single driveway on Barracks Lane between Kenilworth Avenue and Cumberland Road. The entrance is opposite the college sports ground next to Links Allotment just down the road from Oxford Community School.
